Philanthropist donates for breast cancer initiative

Philanthropist Denny Sanford has donated $100 million to the Sanford Health Center to build a new breast cancer center for the citizens of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The donation will be a larger extension of a national breast cancer initiative that will bring world class care to people coping with the deadly disease, according to InForum.com.

"This new initiative will create a world-class center for research, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer in keeping with the standard of excellence in Sanford's cancer and other programs," said Brian Mortenson, president of the Sanford Health Foundation according to the news provider.

Sanford has donated more than half a billion dollars to the system that was dubbed Sanford Health in 2007. The health care system merged with Fargo, North Dakota-based Meritcare in 2009, forming the largest non-profit rural health care center in the United States.

Details will continue to emerge on the donation's allocation and the building schedule of the new cancer center. Sioux Falls residents are likely overjoyed about the new standard of care their community will receive.

According to BreastCancer.org, excluding skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common form of the disease among women.
